Initial reports Haiti’s vulnerable homeless population suffered few deaths as a result of Tropical Storm Isaac are being refuted by new claims by the country’s Civil Protection Office that up to 19 people have died from the storm, some the result of their homes falling in on them.

Isaac passed directly over the southern region of Haiti on Saturday, causing floods, power outages and mudslides throughout the country. An estimated 400,000 Haitians are still housed in temporary shelter as a result of the 2010 earthquake that do not provide adequate shelter against strong winds and rain.

More earthquakes struck California Sunday, following a report earlier this month that seismologists were analyzing a cluster pattern in the region.

More than 70 earthquakes were reported near the California-Mexico border, causing cosmetic damages to older buildings near the epicenter. The highest magnitude earthquake was recorded at 5.4 magnitude by the U.S. Geological Survey.

As Florida faces another hurricane nearly 20 years after the devastating Hurricane Andrew, the CEO of Property Casualty Insurers Association of America reminds Floridians of the gains that have been made in hurricane preparedness, response and recovery.

A majority of the improvements have come from increase communication, including more detailed weather forecasts, more diverse media outlets and direct connections between homeowners, insurers and emergency responders.
